Assistant Deans

HRL is seeking an assistant dean for a key role within Residence Life to help meet current challenges, achieve our strategic initiatives, and bring the University's 2030 plan to fruition. Working within a newly expanded staffing plan, the assistant dean will lead, guide, and coach full-time residence life coordinators (RLCs) and program coordinators (PCs), who will in turn support our student staff.

The successful assistant dean applicant will assume management of strategic University and divisional priorities, which may include first-year experience, second-year experience, residential academic programs, and residence life operations.

The assistant dean role is a full-time University Managerial and Professional Staff position with benefits.

Responsibilities

Assistant deans in the Division of Student Affairs have responsibilities in programmatic, student support, and incident response support areas.

  • Programmatic responsibilities depend on the particular assistant dean’s assignment, but may include program design, implementation, and/or support services related to faculty involvement, academic engagement, first-year experience, and second-year experience.
  • Student support responsibilities include mentoring, training, and/or supervising professional staff, graduate staff, and student leaders, as well as helping students solve problems and respond appropriately to challenges and/or crises.
  • Finally, assistant deans may have responsibilities relating to incident response and crisis management.

Qualifications

The below qualifications are required or preferred, as noted.

Required

  • A Master’s degree in student affairs administration, higher education administration, or a related field.
  • An understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion, as well as demonstrated leadership and effectiveness in promoting respect and appreciation for diversity and pluralism among students and staff.
  • Professional experience in a housing and residence life position.
  • A minimum of six (6) years of progressive professional experience.

Preferred

  • Experience in residence life and supervising staff.
  • Ability to utilize technology in the delivery of student programs.
  • A minimum of seven (7) years of progressive professional experience.

In addition, a competitive applicant for the assistant dean position will possess many of the following preferred knowledge areas, skills, and abilities:

  • A passion for housing and residence life and partnering with student leaders.
  • Excellent organizational, oral, and written communication skills.
  • The ability to gain students’ confidence, and provide sound advice to full-time staff, graduate staff, student staff, and students.
  • Resourcefulness, with a talent for knitting together multiple resources, evaluating information, and identifying alternative solutions.
  • Capability to work both independently and as part of a team (i.e. provides direct support to senior professionals and completes tasks without immediate supervision).
  • Capacity to conceptualize the University's educational mission, strategic aims, and programs, with an understanding of University student culture and the student self-governance model.

Residence Life Coordinator

HRL is seeking residence life coordinators (RLCs) for student-facing roles within Residence Life to help meet current challenges, achieve our strategic initiatives, and bring the University's 2030 plan to fruition. Working within a newly expanded staffing plan, these residence life coordinators will lead, guide, and coach full-time senior residents (SRs) who will in turn support our resident advisors (RAs). The RLC position is directly supervised by an assistant dean.

Responsibilities

Residence life coordinators have responsibilities in programmatic, student support, and incident response support areas.

  • Programmatic responsibilities will include community building in the residential areas and assisting in the development and implementation of programs that enhance the first- and second-year experience as outlined in the University's 2030 plan.
  • Student support responsibilities include mentoring, training, and/or supervising student staff and student leaders, as well as helping students solve problems and respond appropriately to challenges and/or crises.
  • Finally, residence life coordinators will have responsibilities relating to incident response and crisis management.

Qualifications

  • A Bachelor's degree and minimum of two years of experience are required. A master's degree or equivalent in Counseling, Higher Education, Student Affairs Administration, or other related field is preferred. Relevant student experience may be considered.
  • An understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion is required, as well as demonstrated leadership and effectiveness in promoting respect and appreciation for diversity and pluralism among students and staff.

Mail Clerk

HRL seeks a mail clerk to assist in a busy mailroom. The successful candidate is reliable, detail-oriented, and accurate in utilizing the mailroom's computer system for receiving and distributing packages. Mail clerks receive and distribute packages, and operate and maintain mailroom equipment and vehicles. Work is assigned at the task level and performed under direct supervision.

Duties

  • Pick up mail from the the main post office using mailroom vehicles. Deliver packages and mail to satellite locations using mailroom vehicles.
  • Sort mail into mailboxes and onto shelves, notify recipients of packages and uncollected mail, issue packages, assist customers with problems as requested.
  • Process undeliverable mail.
  • Maintain mail preparation equipment and systems in proper working order, keep the work area in a clean and orderly condition.
  • Other duties may be assigned.

Requirements

  • A high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid Virginia driver's license.
